MEDIA ALERT:
Photo Opp: The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI)-Goodwill Industries of Greater Rochester, Inc. and the Greater Rochester Red Cross are teaming up to offer a class to children who are blind or visually impaired to ensure kids are safe when home alone. Safe On Your Own is a program at the American Red Cross, which teaches children who are home alone the importance of behaving responsibly and how to handle themselves when confronted with a challenge.
When: Monday, August 17; 1 pm-2:30pm
Photo Opp 2 pm
Where: ABVI-Goodwill, 422 South Clinton Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620
Purpose: The Safe on Your Own class will be given in the ABVI- Goodwill rehabilitation center, where the kids have access to adaptive technology. Red Cross Safe On Your Own teaches children how to handle basic emergencies and help ensure their safety when they have to be home alone: from telephone tips and first aid to what to do during a power failure or when a stranger comes to the door. “Summer-break is a great time to present Safe on Your Own to kids when they are not in school,” said Janet Jones-Brower, Director of Safety Training at the Greater Rochester Red Cross. “We are happy to continue this great partnership with ABVI-Goodwill to reach more kids and teach them important skills to be independent and self-sufficient.”
