Local woman honored for commitment to Red Cross
Schiavi named 2011 Founder’s Award winner

DANSVILLE, N.Y., Thursday, October 27, 2011—Annually, the American Red Cross Clara Barton Chapter #1 recognizes an individual who personifies the leadership qualities and tireless energy that defined Clara Barton. This year’s recipient of the Founder’s Award is Dorothy Schiavi of Dansville.

Schiavi was chosen as this year’s recipient because of her contributions to the American Red Cross and to her community at large. After serving 38 years teaching in the public and parochial school system and 20 years as a nun with the Order of Our Lady of Mercy, Schiavi began volunteering regularly at the American Red Cross. She is the Clara Barton Chapter #1’s volunteer coordinator and is instrumental in organizing blood drives. Schiavi also serves on the board of directors for the chapter.

“Dorothy is an integral part of this chapter who is always available to help, whether it be assisting at a special event, scheduling a blood drive, or coordinating other volunteers to help us out,” said Sandra Shaw, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Clara Barton Chapter #1. “We are thrilled to honor and thank her with this award.”

A luncheon in Schiavi’s honor will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the American Legion beginning at 12PM. For more information, please contact Erin D. Caldwell at 585-370-1834.
