Red Cross launches new hands-only CPR training with free course
PERINTON, N.Y., Friday, July 22, 2011—The Red Cross has developed a new CPR course geared toward training ordinary citizens in emergency response. The technique, called hands-only CPR, teaches chest compressions without the aid of rescue breathing and allows bystanders not trained in full CPR to assist at the scene of an emergency.
According to the Red Cross, studies have shown that being trained in hands-only CPR can make the lifesaving difference when someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest. With that information in mind, the Red Cross plans to educate 5 million people nationwide in hands-only CPR techniques this year.
The American Red Cross of the Finger Lakes NY Region, based in Rochester, will offer its first hands-only CPR training session this Sunday, July 24 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at Design Pool & Spa, Ltd. in Perinton NY. Design Pool & Spa, Ltd. has sponsored this weekend’s class so participants can be trained for free. Registration is required and space is limited, so call 585-223-8650 to reserve your seat.
“We’re very pleased to begin offering hands-only CPR in the Finger Lakes Region and will provide many other opportunities throughout 2011 to acquire this critical training,” said Janet Brower, Training Specialist for the Western NY Territory of the American Red Cross.
The course lasts approximately 45 minutes and instructs attendees on how to effectively perform chest compressions. There is no certification upon completion of the course, but courses attendees can train others in hands-only CPR.
“We hope that eventually, everyone will be skilled in hands-only CPR,” said Brower.
