Red Cross’s Next Generation Leaders Program Provides Leadership Training,
Skills Development for Rochester Area Youth

Rochester NY, Monday, February 7, 2011—The American Red Cross of Greater Rochester is currently accepting applications for the spring session of its Next Generation Leaders Program, a series of lectures and workshops that promotes leadership skills in youth. Primarily geared toward African-American and Latino high school students from the Rochester City School District, the NGLP teaches students lessons they may not learn in school, including service learning, public speaking, financial literacy, and conflict resolution, to name a few.

“The program gives students a sense of what they want to do in life,” said Jennifer Taylor, Program Coordinator at the Red Cross. “It is used as a stepping stone to live the life they want to live.”

Students in grades 9 to 12 with a GPA of 2.5 or higher are offered the opportunity to learn teamwork skills and attitudes that can be utilized in the workforce. In addition to the workshops, each student is paired up with a mentor in collaboration with the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Mentors are personally matched to each student to get the best support.

“The mentors are great role models to the students,” said Taylor. “They help the students with everything from their every day problems to their future career development.”

The program starts March 2 and continues every Wednesday until April 27 from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The Next Generations Leaders Program is accepting students until the end of this week. This program is free of charge. To apply for the Next Generations Leaders Program, or if you are interested in presenting a workshop or becoming a mentor, call 585-241-4261.
