	OUR HISTORY The tireless humanitarian efforts of Clara Barton led to the founding of the American Association of the Red Cross at her Washington, D.C., home on October 3, 1881. That same year, the Greater Rochester Chapter was formed primarily to provide aid to the victims of the Michigan Forest Fires. This relief operation was the first in national Red Cross history. And the Greater Rochester Chapter was a key participant. LEARN MORE

Since Clara Barton founded this Chapter in 1881, the people of Greater Rochester have supported our mission of helping people prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies. Our volunteers give enormous amounts of time each year to help people whose lives are changed instantly by natural and/or man-made disasters. The Greater Rochester Red Cross serves the City of Rochester and Monroe and West Ontario counties.

Our mission
The Greater Rochester Chapter of the American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help all people prevent, prepare for, and respond to personal, community, and other emergencies.

A vital community partner
We recognize the value and role of other community-based organizations in fulfilling our mission, and we partner with them to expand our impact in our neighborhoods. The Red Cross is for all people and we strive to provide lifesaving programs and services to all the communities in our region.

The American Red Cross of the Finger Lakes Region serves Monroe, Ontario, Livingston, Seneca, Wayne and Yates Counties.
